In the early 1970s I began to wonder why
we did not make better use of coal. I still wonder. The coal is
there, worldwide, and a lot of it will be used. Unless we use it less, and use it better, the
consequences will be devastating. We know potential improvements. I advocated some of them for many years -
see for example here. But the coal industry was, and remains, uninterested.
The evidence is now unambiguous: coal is endangering the planet.
